If elected as one of the three borough councillors for Paddox Ward on 3rd May, I will definitely vote AGAINST the proposals to site a crematorium and cemetery in the Rainsbrook Valley, at every opportunity. Having lived in Paddox Ward (under the new ward boundaries) for over 25 years, I know the Rainsbrook Valley area, and I have enjoyed many pleasant walks there over the years. I am not persuaded that Rugby needs a new crematorium or cemetery anywhere, but even if it does, the Rainsbrook Valley is the wrong location.

In the event of us taking control, we shall consult all interested members of the public and interested Parties before a final decision is made.
The Environmental and Financial issues require considerable analysis prior to any commitment being given.
Leader of the Labour Party Group (RUGBY) Jim Shera made the following statement: “I fully support listening to all members of the public and we will consult fully before any decision is made."

We have also asked Nigel to make his personal position clear.

As you are standing as Councillor for Paddox Ward on May 3rd, could you please let me know your views on the proposed plans for a Crematorium and Cemetery off Ashlawn Road, the plans show that RBC/DDC will be going against RBC Core Strategy by building in open countryside, therefore opening up a precidence for developers to move in and build on the South side of Ashlawn Road. As a teacher yourself and therefore committed to and feel passionately about young people, what are your feelings on the planned crematorium being in such close proximity to 2 large and thriving schools and the rugby club which supports young people from very young ages.

Thanks for the constructive advice Rachel. However I beg to differ over your separation of local politics and national events. Put simply it is naïve to think we can live in isolation in Rugby immune from the massive impact of the recent budget.

Tory-Liberal national cuts constantly impact on peoples everyday lives in this town. Be it higher burglary rates caused by 20% cuts to the police budget, the closure of Birch Ward caused by needless NHS re-organisation and cost saving or the diminished nature of Rugby's High Street caused by a likely double dip recession. In turn it is logical to point out that national economic mismanagement by your government limits what we can do in the future at council level. When people go to the ballot box they select candidates from national parties for a reason. Therefore our parties for good or ill reflect our values and priorities as candidates.

I am sure then that the forthcoming May election will reflect both national events and the role they play within a local context. It is also worth noting that many of your Tory claimed local achievements are based upon strategies established by the former Labour government or are reliant upon the work of a range of political parties not just your own. I think you should recognise the work of your borough colleagues fully as well as the danger posed by economic plans that fail to put Rugby first.

It is somewhat telling that we have all out elections for the Borough Council in May and you have not listed one issue that is under the control of the Borough Council.

I don't doubt that it is because you are, albeit reluctantly, aware of the fantastic achievements of the council this year:
- council tax freeze
- leisure centre
- proposed crematorium
- mortgage indemnity scheme
- rural broadband
- money to the Community Safety Partnership

Just to name a few of the investments that 'Tory led council' has been making this year.

Looking forward to seeing your local campaign for the elections this year - hope you'll know what the borough council does by then!
